The Problem
The amateur football club ONT, based in the Frisian town of Opeinde, faced a major water consumption challenge. With around 600 members and 63 showers, the club’s facilities used approximately 700,000 litres of water each year — mostly for showering after training and matches. This level of usage placed significant strain on both operating costs and environmental sustainability, prompting the club to seek a smarter, more responsible solution for its water use.
The Solution
In November 2021, ONT implemented an innovative water recycling system designed to capture, clean, and reuse shower water. Instead of sending greywater down the drain, the system filters and treats it, making it suitable for toilet flushing and other non-potable uses. The approach not only optimises water use but also demonstrates how local sports organisations can take practical steps toward sustainability without compromising comfort or performance.
The Outcome
Since the system’s installation, the club has achieved an impressive 45% reduction in tap water consumption, lowering annual usage to around 400,000 litres. Beyond the savings, ONT’s initiative has earned national recognition — the facility was proudly named “Dutch Sustainable Sports Facility of the Year.” This project proves that even community-level clubs can lead meaningful environmental change through innovation and commitment.
