Overview
Challenge
The Freeway Golf Course, located in the heart of Balwyn North, needed a hardscaping solution that could do more than just look good. The City of Boroondara was facing two key problems with their existing golf cart path — tree root damage causing cracking, and frequent water pooling after heavy rain. With a large number of mature trees lining the course, traditional paving options simply weren’t cutting it.
They needed a permeable paving system that would not only withstand root movement but also manage stormwater effectively, keeping the path safe and functional all year round.
Our Permeable Paving Solution
To address these challenges, Porous Lane’s permeable pavers were installed across an 830m² stretch of the golf cart path. This solution was carefully selected for its ability to reduce surface runoff, promote water infiltration, and flex with minor ground movement — making it ideal for areas impacted by tree root activity.
As a bonus, the project had a strong sustainability impact — over 2,500 waste tyres were recycled into the paving material, helping divert waste from landfill and reduce carbon impact.
Results After 12 Months
One year on, the performance of the permeable paving system has exceeded expectations:
- No visible cracking — even near mature tree roots
- High permeability maintained — rainwater continues to drain effectively
- Improved path safety — no pooling or slippery surfaces after rain
- Low maintenance needs — minimal upkeep required since installation
