Next week is World Water Week, which is a great time to reflect on the key water issues we are facing, not only as a nation, but also around the globe.

Held since 1991 in Stockholm, this year’s theme is ‘Bridging Borders: Water for a Peaceful and Sustainable Future’.

Many topics are discussed during the week with resilience being a key theme running through many of the sessions, especially regarding climate change.

Flood or drought – prevention is key

We currently live in a world of extremes when it comes to water. Winter brings excessive amounts of water, and we flood, then summer often doesn’t give us enough water and we end up with water restrictions!

Unfortunately, these weather patterns can also be completely unpredictable which means having plans in place to deal with either end of the spectrum. We can then ensure that we remain water resilient.

Only using potable water for drinking is a great first step to not just reducing our national water consumption, but also helping to take pressure off our current water infrastructure.

Stormwater attenuation products can be used to collect rainwater when there is an excessive amount of it with water used when required to water gardens, wash cars, or even do laundry. For Kiwis that pay directly for their water it also helps to reduce their monthly bill.

On the flip side, fixed or portable flood barriers will help stem the flow of water into your residential or commercial property, thus protecting your assets from damage.

Understanding your risks

Knowing what your risks are when it comes to flooding is a good starting point. Working with the right people to implement the best solution is your next step, so that you hopefully have something in play before the next weather bomb hits.

It is also worth noting that having preventative measures in place is important from an insurance perspective. Many insurers are tightening up on properties that are at high risk of flooding. You therefore may not be able to get insurance at all or it will be very expensive – not to mention of course a potentially horrendous clean up if water enters your property.

Now is the time to get planning. Our team are water resilience experts and are more than happy to sit down with you for a no obligation chat to work out a way forward for your property or development.

Happy Water Week everyone.
