Winter has arrived and so has the flooding

Commercial building rooftops in winter rain

Winter has well and truly arrived bringing with it the cold and the rain. It has also unfortunately brought flooding, with a State of Emergency being declared in Wairoa last month due to around 200 properties being damaged.

If you have a property in a flood plain or are in a coastal area, it is important to consider what you can do to help prevent flooding, especially during adverse weather.

There are two key options you can consider –

  • Portable flood solutions
  • Permanent flood barriers

Portable flood solutions

Flooding stopped with Floody at roller doors

A portable flood solution, such as Floody, is a cost effective and flexible option that you can put up without any specialist expertise at a moment’s notice to help protect your property against flooding. It is stackable and can be stored in a garage or shed, making it super easy to put up any time there is a weather warning.

Ideal for flatter surfaces, one Floody is equivalent to 16 sandbags. You simply snap the modules together, with no tools required, and then pack it away when no longer needed.

Permanent flood barriers

Permanent flood barriers are ideal for commercial buildings and in some residential properties or where we need to protect and asset from flooding.

There are several options here –

  • Swing barriers – which literally swing closed to isolate water up to the barrier height.
  • Retractable barriers – which travel sideways to close a gap in an existing opening.
  • Demountable barriers – which can be installed permanently or prior to a weather event
  • Tilting & concealed barriers – which passively activates by flood water. These are perfect for apartment buildings, basement carparks and office blocks.
  • Flood doors – designed to withstand flood water
