Overview
Project Type: Community Housing Development
Status: Under Construction
The Salvation Army is expanding its community housing footprint in East Auckland with a new 41-home development on the corner of Chapel Road and Baverstock Road. Adjacent to the existing 46-unit ‘Kaitiakitanga’ complex, this latest project will offer a variety of housing typologies—from five-bedroom standalone homes to a 12-unit, three-storey apartment block.
The development is being delivered by Meridian Construction and Fat Parrot Architecture, the same team behind the successful Kaitiakitanga project. Once completed, the site will also include a basketball court, playground, and green open spaces to support a vibrant, family-friendly community.
Our Role
Watersmart was brought on to design and install a stormwater reuse solution for the site that supports long-term water resilience for residents.
Working closely with Meridian Construction’s project management team, we have so far supplied and installed over 300 AquaComb tanks—each with a capacity of 250L. These underground tanks are built to handle both space constraints and stormwater management requirements across the diverse building footprints.
What’s Next
In the next project phase, we’ll return to install and commission the pump systems during the landscaping stage. Once operational, each home will have access to up to 3,000L of captured water for non-potable use—such as toilet flushing, laundry, and outdoor irrigation—supporting both sustainability goals and lower utility costs for residents.
This project exemplifies how smart infrastructure can empower social housing to be more self-sufficient, resilient, and future-ready.
